Abstract:

Background and purpose : In this study , different aspects to Ascaris lumbricoides antigenic effects on host responses in different stages of infection was determined counting the number of eosinophiles by titration of antibody and by electrophoresis of serum globulins. Materials and Methods : The study was performed on 120 infected cases , residing in Khair Abad village of Isfahan province , in the age proup of 20 ± 5 years. Laboratoly investigations were done on the serum of infected cases by indirect immunofluorescence antibody technique using the second stage larva as antigen , and serum globulin analysis by electrophoresis , and eosonophile count by smear preparation. Statistical analysis was done using t-test. Results : The blood smear preparation of 120 infected patients showed the highest eosinophile count (76%) in four patients , and the lowest eosinophile count (1%) in six patients. Most infected patients had eosinophile count of 1-16%. Out of the 120 infected patients , 85 cases (70%) had the antibody titer of 1:20 to 1:320 and 35 cases were without antibody. By electrophoresis the serum of the patients with antibody showed significant increase in γ globulin level as compared to sera without antibody (P<0.0001). The rate of α1, α2 and β globulins were variable in both positive and negative groups , which showed a statistically insignificant difference. Conclusion : According to the results , the increase in number of eosinophiles and production of antibody is temporary and also indirect immunofluorescence technique should not be the base for identification of infection with A.
